Ellen Gormley

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Ellen at her home on October 29, 2021, after a brief illness. Ellen is predeceased by her devoted parents Hubert and Helen, brother Hugh, and her twin sister Jane. Ellen is survived by her loving family Susan Gormley, James Gormley, and Patricia Gerondeau, as well as several nieces, nephews, one grand-nephew, and many close cousins.

Ellen graduated from Holy Cross Academy and Fordham University Lincoln Center. While at Fordham University, Ellen was Coordinator of the Living Library, a campus club that matched disabled students with readers, and pre-recorded library materials. At the Center for Independent Living, Ellen instructed adults with late-onset blindness of community resources, as well as legal and financial entitlements. Throughout Ellen's life, she worked as a literacy instructor, and a private tutor helping individuals perfect their English-language skills, and prepare to take their General Education Degree. Ellen was an early member of the Achilles Track Club NYC and completed the NYC Marathon in 1988. Additionally, Ellen was an active member of The National Federation of the Blind and followed the advances in assistive technologies and civil rights of the blind community. Ellen enjoyed many diverse interests, and she especially enjoyed Irish history, literature, and music. Our dear Ellen was dearly loved, she will always be so very special to her family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 19, 2021, at Andrett Funeral Home, 199 Bleecker Street, in New York City from 2:00 pm-5:00 pm, and from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm. Ellen's Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of the Epiphany, 375 Second Avenue on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at 11:00 am.
